Iemanya's History

IEMANYA OCEANICA began in June 2000 during the annual American Elasmobranch Society meeting in La  Paz, Mexico where marine biologist Ladan Mohajerani came together with other young marine scientists  and conservationists to merge their commitment to the conservation of sharks and rays. In the  following months the young group began a correspondence with the dream of starting a non-profit  organization dedicated to this cause. They fell in love with the legend of IEMANYA (pronounced ya-MAHN-ja) and decided that  their organization would be aptly named after this mythological guardian of the sea.

On October 31, 2000, Ladan's life ended prematurely on the Singapore Airlines crash in Taipei while  returning home from the Reef Conservation Symposium in Bali, Indonesia.  Following her tragic  death, Ladan's family, colleagues and friends have come together to make IEMANYA OCEANICA a reality.   IEMANYA OCEANICA is dedicated to Ladan and to the welfare of sharks and rays.
